Applications remain open for our 2021 research grants, including the new Jeremy Ingham fund, which will support research in engineering geology and related fields. To apply, complete the application form and obtain supporting forms from two Fellows.

SOCIETY / Virtual Seismic Atlas Appeal
Our friends at the Virtual Seismic Atlas (VSA) are seeking support to continue operating. VSA is a free open access community resource for sharing the geological interpretation of seismic data. It is used by thousands of geoscientists every week across educational institutions and industry. |

In March 2021, the operating software on the VSA’s host server will become defunct. They need to pay for an essential upgrade by the end of January. VSA have already secured about 35% of the funding necessary to complete the upgrade, including a donation from the Geological Society, but they need around £9,000 more to survive.

EDUCATION/ Applications for the 2021 ZEISS-GSL Scholarship are now open!
Worth over £8000, this fantastic scholarship is being offered by GSL and Carl Zeiss Microscopy Ltd and is aimed at Earth Science PhD students who are Fellows of the Society.
The scholarship is intended for use in innovative microscopy within Earth Science-related PhD projects.

EVENTS / Geohazards online training lectures
Aiming to enhance the continuing professional development of geologists, we are offering a series of 13 online training events on geohazards. This excellent course series is suitable for people from a wide range of professions dealing with ground issues. The lectures will be particularly beneficial for recent graduates and those working towards Chartership as well as civil engineers and environmental scientists who work in the built environment but do not have a significant background in geology.
All courses offered can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirement.

| EVENTS / January public lecture - Land degradation: connections with climate change and armed conflicts (Virtual)
Kicking off our public lecture series of 2021, Asmeret Asefaw Berhe from the University of California, will discuss the global extent and distribution of soil degradation, implications of soil degradation for climate change mitigation, and the different ways armed conflicts cause and perpetuate long-term degradation of the soil resources.

EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY / Call for evidence: Inquiry into Equity in the STEM workforce
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM have launched a new inquiry into Equity in the UK STEM workforce. The APPG aims to examine how the Government and organisations employing STEM workers are helping to create a diverse and inclusive environment.

|
The enquiry is looking to continue to raise the challenges of diversity and inclusion throughout the STEM community and the Geological Society intends to make a submission. We value the opinions of the Earth science community and would love you to help us!

LIBRARY / Update on Library Services due to COVID-19
Following the latest government guidance related to COVID-19 we have temporarily suspended our weekly postal loan and document supply service. We hope to resume these services at the earliest opportunity when it is safe to do so. The Library remains closed to Fellows and other users at this time.
Library staff are working from home Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm and are available to answer enquiries by email and by phone (Tel: +44 (0)20 7434 9944, option 3).

The following Library services remain available:
• E-Journals and E-Books
• Inter-Library loans - we can order books and papers from the British Library and elsewhere
• Research/Enquiries - as well as helping with the Library's electronic resources we can advise where to find material. We are able to access additional resources to those you might find yourself online so please do ask!
• Database searches - we can search the GeoRef and Geofacets databases and send you lists of references
• Map enquiries - the Map Librarian can advise on holdings, offer advice and direct you towards online mapping where available
• Archive enquiries - the Archivist is available to answer any enquiries relating to the Archive
• Picture Library – discover hundreds of images from our historical collections

POLICY/ Climate change statement - November 2020
In 2018, the Geological Society of London and the UK Paleoclimate Society jointly convened an expert panel to assess the current state of understanding of climate change in the geological record. The group of 16 researchers used published literature and comments submitted from Fellows to construct an up-to-date assessment of the geological record of climate change. The statement also details what the resulting records of past climate can tell us about future climate change, with a particular focus on ancient CO₂ - driven warming.
The statement was approved by Council on 25 November 2020, and published in the Journal of the Geological Society on 28 December 2020.
